There is a choice in life we must all make, consciously or unconsciously: whether to float with the tide or swim for a goal. It's much easier to enjoy the floating than to swim against the current. Here at Prion, we choose to take the hard route. To move consciously according to our principles and purposes.
These are our 5 principles, our core values. This is what we believe. These are the mental models we use to make better work and business decisions.
The customer is the hero in our story. We aren't here to compete for the hero's role. In our customers' journey, they're the protagonist, we are the masters. We are the guide who has a plan to help the hero. The customer is Luke, we are Yoda. Every new product, every new feature, starts with the customer in the center of the story. Everything we do must transform the customer experience in some positive way. If we are not delivering value to the customer, we are not doing our job.
Speed doesn't matter if we're in the wrong direction. There's no point in gathering the best programmers in the world if the product we are building doesn't solve a real problem. We would be just as well if we spent that time on a beach sipping umbrella drinks. We want speed with direction. We seek velocity, movement towards a goal. Every new product or feature must bring us closer to our goals.
Goals are important, but alone they are no guarantee of success. Winners and losers have the same goals; what determine the outcome are their systems. Goals tell us where to go. Systems tell us what we need to do each day to get there. While goals are focused on tomorrow, systems are focused on today.
Skills can be developed. It's harder to develop attitude. We prefer working with people of attitude and training the skills that are missing. People with attitude never stop learning and are always looking for higher standards. We value people who act for the good of the company beyond the limits of their own teams. People who take responsibility for results and never say, "That's not my job." We look for people with an entrepreneurial spirit. Creative leaders who are proactive and independent.
Being happy at work is essential. Happy people are more productive and creative. We spend half of our days in the office, work has to be fun. This doesn't mean that we don't work hard, but that we value a healthy and well-humoured environment. We believe work should be rewarding, with clear expectations and appropriate challenges. We look for an environment where everyone can be authentic. No formalities, no pretending to be someone you're not. We believe work is also a place to build relationships and make friends.
